Arizona Nursing Home Neglect
Elder care neglect involves the failure of nursing home staff to provide requisite care and consideration for their patients. It has been reported that as many as a quarter of a million seniors in the United States may currently be suffering from gross neglect from their caretakers.
What is senior neglect?
Caregivers are hired or appointed to ensure the safety and health of their elder charges. A caregiver who neglects all or part of his or her duty can be sued for resultant damages, particularly where the victim has suffered a great deal of unnecessary and unwarranted pain or difficulty as a result of the neglect.
Neglect might include: failure to provide a nutritious or doctor-recommended diet; failure to provide adequate hydration, medications, clothing and shelter; and failure to alert authorities upon noticing senior abuse.
Inadequate bedside care can also be construed as neglect. For instance, a senior recovering from an operation, fall, or general fatigue may be consigned to bed for days to months. To recuperate correctly, the patient must receive good bedside care. The caregiver must change sheets, prevent the formation of bedsores, and ensure the patient gets enough food, water, and medicine.
Signs of neglect can include: sudden weight loss, depression, self-reports of abuse or neglect, anecdotal reports from other residents or from visiting family members.
